China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Visit UK for Strategic Talks

(Reuters) - China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to visit Britain next month to hold talks with his UK counterpart David Lammy, The Guardian reported on Sunday.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office (FCDO) is making plans to host Wang in mid-February, the report said, citing three people briefed on the plans.

The purpose of Wang's visit was to hold a Britain-China strategic dialogue for the first time since 2018, the report added, citing one of the people briefed on the matter.

The FCDO did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, while the Chinese foreign ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.

British finance minister Rachel Reeves visited China earlier this month, a visit intended to revive high-level economic and financial talks that have been frozen since 2019.

The Labour government, in power in Britain since July, has made improving ties with China one of its main foreign policy goals after a period under successive Conservative governments when relations plunged to their lowest level in decades.
