Experts Predict Netherlands Will Likely Fall Short of 2030 Climate Goals

Netherlands Climate Goals and Projections

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -The Netherlands will very likely miss its climate goal for 2030 as current policies to decrease greenhouse gas emissions fall short, the Dutch government's main climate policy adviser said on Tuesday.

Current Emission Reduction Policies

The euro zone's fifth-largest economy aims to decrease its CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030, relative to 1990 levels, but the group of experts said there is only a very small chance that goal will be met.

Future Emission Plans Post-2030

Current policies will most likely lead to a reduction of between 45% and 53% by the end of the decade, it said. Emissions were 37% lower than in 1990 last year, but only decreased slightly from 2023.

The adviser also warned over a lack of plans to further decrease emissions after 2030, even though the country and the European Union as a whole are aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.
