Italy's Banking Sector and Public Finances

ROME (Reuters) -The Italian banking sector has made "stratospheric profits" over the last five years and must make a contribution to state finances, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Tuesday.

The government is assessing ways to fund billions of euros of tax cuts as part of the upcoming 2026 budget to be unveiled next month.

"Logic dictates that, without bullying anyone, it is only fair that everyone contributes. This will not be a crusade, we will sit down at the table so that everyone can give a contribution. I believe this is absolutely necessary," Giorgetti said, addressing a political rally in the central Marche region.

Recent Government Measures

A package of government-imposed measures at the end of 2024 raised some 4 billion euros ($4.72 billion) from banks to help finance this year's budget.

Future Contributions Expected

Giorgetti's co-ruling League party wants banks to contribute again with more than 1 billion euros to the 2026 budget, sources said this month.
