MILAN (Reuters) -Italy's Eni is closely monitoring the security situation in Iraq, a spokesperson for the energy group said on Thursday after the United States decided to evacuate its embassy in the country.

"Eni does not comment on ongoing international political dynamics, but, as always, it closely monitors the situation in terms of security, according to strict standards and in line with international best practices," a spokesman for the group said.

Eni has been operating in Iraq on the Zubair oil and gas field since 2009 through a technical service contract. It currently has over 500 people operating in the country, most of whom are international workers.
