ZURICH (Reuters) - Switzerland is closely following the impact of potential U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and continues to pursue dialogue with his administration, the government said on Wednesday.
The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said Switzerland and the U.S. are close economic partners, adding that it wished to maintain the "best possible market access."
"Switzerland is continuing to seek talks with the Trump administration in order to further strengthen and deepen bilateral economic relations," SECO said in a statement.
SECO was responding to a question from Reuters about U.S. tariffs that took effect on Wednesday and whether it would join in with counter tariffs imposed by the European Union.
SECO said it was closely monitoring potential U.S. measures and analysing their possible consequences for the Swiss economy.
"Switzerland values economic freedom, entrepreneurship, appropriate regulation, and market-based economic policy," it added. "We remain committed to this."
The United States is a crucial market for Swiss products, taking nearly 19% of its goods exports in 2024.
