As talk of globalization has become even more politicized, the consensus about its pace and inevitability is being called into question. What do Trump, Brexit, and nationalist movements around the world mean for companies doing business internationally?  How are emerging economies reshaping global flows, and what kinds of strategies can address both near-term shocks and longer-run trends?

InThe New Global Road Map (May 1, 2018), strategy professor and globalization expert Pankaj Ghemawat undertakes a thorough examination of changes in the global business environment. Overheated rhetoric in the public sphere has given rise to a lot of what he calls ‘globaloney’ – unfounded and unproven assumptions about where globalization stands today and how it is evolving. Through his data-rich analysis of global interactions over the years, Ghemawat brings some order to the chaos and discerns practical implications for companies.

The New Global Road Map guides executives through the key considerations for building a robust corporate strategy in today’s business climate. Part one focuses on mapping globalization at a time of turbulence, and part two moves on to the challenges of managing globalization at the company level. Ghemawat articulates what needs to be addressed: how and where to compete; how to connect across global organizations; and the vital importance of understanding the political, economic, and social forces that impact multinational firms. With Ghemawat’s frameworks, business leaders will be able to make calm and clearheaded decisions about global strategy in a world that is deeply mistrustful and angry about globalization.

Pankaj Ghemawat is Global Professor of Management and Strategy and Director of the Center for the Globalization of Education and Management at the Stern School of Business at New York University and Professor of Strategic Management at IESE Business School. He is the author of a number of influential books including Redefining Global StrategyWorld 3.0, and The Laws of Globalization.
