Key Takeaways

  • Headline retail volumes accelerated in January (up 1.5% m/m; +3.0% y/y), marking the strongest monthly gain since March 2024 and suggesting early-2026 demand held up despite cost-of-living pressures. (tradingeconomics.com)
  • Underlying spending looked softer once volatile motor trades were removed: ex-motor retail volumes slipped 0.4% on the month, even as they remained higher than a year earlier (+2.1% y/y). (marketscreener.com)
  • The retail pickup comes alongside moderating-but-still-positive inflation: Ireland’s CPI was up 2.7% over the 12 months to January 2026 (slightly down from 2.8% in December), which may be easing pressure on real purchasing power at the margin. (cso.ie)
