SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling on the federal government to clean a contaminated canal in Puerto Rico.

De Blasio visited the canal called the Cano Martin Pena (CAH-nyoh Mahr-TEEN’ PAY’-nyah) in San Juan on Saturday with other elected officials from Puerto Rico and New York.

He said at a reception later that the federal government needs to commit to cleaning the polluted canal.

De Blasio said the government must “remember its obligation to Puerto Rico.”

The mayor and other Democratic elected officials from New York City and New York state were in San Juan for the annual Somos El Futuro conference.

De Blasio met earlier Saturday with Puerto Rican Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla.
