Poland's Green Hydrogen Initiative
WARSAW, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Poland moved a step closer to importing green hydrogen from Finland on Tuesday, signing an agreement that sets up cooperation between state-controlled fuel firm Orlen and three Finnish energy companies.
Agreement Details
Poland is seeking to diversify its energy sources and increase economic and political security in the face of the war in Ukraine, as well as to implement a strategy to ensure low-emission fuels.
Logistical Considerations
"This is an important issue concerning energy independence, concerning the development of good technologies," Polish Minister of State Assets Wojciech Balczun said at a signing ceremony.
Future Plans for Hydrogen Storage
The cooperation agreement was signed between Orlen and three Finnish companies - ABO Energy Suomi, Nordic Ren-Gas, and VolagHy Kuopio SPV - and concerns the production and supply of green hydrogen.
"The partners will also collaborate on defining the logistical conditions enabling the transport of hydrogen and its derivatives from Finland to the Orlen Group's refineries and chemical plants in Poland," the Polish Ministry of Assets announced in a press release.
Orlen currently has seven operating underground gas storage facilities and plans to expand its hydrogen transmission and storage capacity.
