LONDON (AP) — Financial services startup Square is taking aim at cash registers across the globe, making its point-of-sale software available internationally in English, Spanish, French and Japanese.

The company, whose small cubic credit card reader can be used to turn a smartphone or a tablet into a portable sized till, had initially limited its activity to the U.S. But it is facing competition from a variety of players, including San Jose-based PayPal Inc. and Troy, Michigan-based PayAnywhere.

The global launch also marks another step in Square CEO Jack Dorsey’s effort to raise his company’s profile and build the fortune he accumulated as co-founder of the microblogging service Twitter Inc.
