Stellantis CEO: Leapmotor Venture a Future Model for China Partnerships

Stellantis and Leapmotor: A Blueprint for Future Automotive Collaborations

MILAN, April 30 (Reuters) - Stellantis has a mutually rewarding partnership with China's Leapmotor which can be a model for future cooperation with other Chinese automakers, CEO Antonio Filosa said on Thursday.

CEO Filosa's Vision for Chinese Partnerships

"We take this partnership as an example of what we can do with, for instance, (another) Chinese automaker," Filosa said in a call with journalists, after the Franco-Italian company presented its first quarter results.

Background: Stellantis and Leapmotor Joint Venture

Stellantis teamed up with Leapmotor in 2023 when it acquired around a fifth of the Chinese company and formed a joint venture in charge of producing and selling Leapmotor cars outside of China.

Upcoming Projects and Expansion Plans

Stellantis will this year start assembling Leapmotor's B10 compact SUV in Spain, while Reuters reported earlier this month that the two groups were in advanced talks to develop an Opel-branded electric SUV using the Chinese company's technology.

Future Prospects and Market Impact

As Stellantis prepares to unveil its new business plan on May 21, speculation is increasing that the Franco-Italian group could strike more deals with Leapmotors and other Chinese manufacturers to help fill its unused capacity in Europe.

Customer Base and Brand Strategy

The CEO said Leapmotor was winning over customers from other automakers, rather than stealing them from other Stellantis brands.

Key Takeaways

  • In October 2023 Stellantis invested about €1.5 billion to acquire around 20% of Leapmotor and launched a 51/49 joint venture—Leapmotor International—to produce and export Leapmotor EVs outside China, leveraging Stellantis’s global reach and Leapmotor’s technology (stellantis.com).
  • The compact electric SUV Leapmotor B10, produced on the Leap 3.5 platform, began international debut in late 2024 and will be assembled at Stellantis’s Figueruelas (Zaragoza) plant in Spain starting in the second half of 2026 (en.wikipedia.org).
  • These moves reinforce a mutually beneficial partnership: Stellantis fills European capacity and gains agile EV tech, while Leapmotor gains global exposure and distribution—creating a potential model for future Chinese automaker collaborations (cincodias.elpais.com).
