Telecom Italia Weighs Early Termination of INWIT Contract Amid Industry Pressure
Telecom Italia's Consideration of INWIT Contract Termination
Background and Context
MILAN, March 25 (Reuters) - Telecom Italia (TIM) is considering an early termination of its long‑term contract with Italian telecoms tower operator INWIT, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Industry Impact and Competitive Moves
The move would mirror a similar step by Swisscom's Fastweb, INWIT's other main client, piling pressure on Italy's largest mast operator.
Board Discussions and Company Response
The sources, who said early termination of the contract is the most likely scenario, added that TIM directors are expected to discuss the matter at a board meeting over the coming weekend.
Telecom Italia declined to comment.
INWIT's Position and Revenue Implications
The towers company is resisting a push to renegotiate its contracts with its main tenants, saying it would be an unjustified revision of their original terms.
The contracts generate nearly 85% of INWIT's revenue
