Belgium to buy Engie's nuclear assets in the country to secure energy supply
Belgian Government Moves to Secure National Energy Supply
Acquisition of Engie's Nuclear Utility Assets
BRUSSELS, April 30 (Reuters) - The Belgian government plans to buy the nuclear utility assets of French power group Engie in Belgium, the parties said on Thursday, in a move Brussels said would help secure the country's energy supplies.
Scope of the Proposed Deal
The proposed deal would cover all nuclear activities currently owned and operated by Engie and its Electrabel unit, including the country’s seven nuclear reactors.
Impact on Belgium's Energy Policy
Suspension of Nuclear Decommissioning Plans
Prime Minister Bart De Wever said the transaction would also involve suspending plans to decommission nuclear operations in Belgium.
Government's Rationale for the Move
"The government is making the choice of having a secure, affordable and long-lasting source of energy, with less reliance upon fossil fuels, which will give us more control over our supplies," wrote de Wever on X.
