Arrest and Espionage Allegations in Germany
BERLIN, April 29 (Reuters) - German police have arrested a Kazakh national on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service, including sending information to Russia about military support for Ukraine and the German defence industry, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday.
Identity and Background of the Suspect
The suspect, identified only as Sergei K. in line with German privacy laws, is believed to have been in contact with Russia's intelligence service from Germany since May 2025 at the latest, prosecutors said in a statement.
Alleged Activities and Information Shared
They said they suspect that Sergei K. sent details of German military assistance to Ukraine and about its arms and defence industry, especially on companies involved in developing drones and robotic systems.
Additional Espionage Actions
The suspect, detained in Berlin on Tuesday, is also suspected of passing on photos of public buildings in the German capital and of military convoys on motorways, including a convoy from a NATO member state.
Potential Sabotage and Recruitment Efforts
Prosecutors said they believe the suspect also sent information on potential targets for sabotage in Germany and offered to recruit further individuals.
